Culturally Competent Care – An Overview
The recent cultural competence movement encourages us to look at things from the perspective of our minority patients, whose experiences and languages have put them at a substantial cultural distance from American healthcare. Imagine receiving medical care in a place where you don’t understand the language. It can be frightening in many ways. The U.S. has always been a melting pot of ethnicities and treating minority patients is not the exception. This course explores in more detail how and why to incorporate cultural awareness into healthcare.
Covered in this course:
- Define culturally competent care
- Describe common barriers to cultural competency
- Discuss the elements that go into an effective model of cultural competence.
